1998 Highlights
A
Story of Healing
1998
Academy Award Best Documentary
Writer, Producer, Director
Donna Dewey
Nguyen Van Ket, a 16-year-old
boy from the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, was born
with a cleft palate that kept him isolated and
lonely. Hearing that the arrival of an American
medical team was imminent, Nguyen walks through
the jungle to the provincial hospital, where
he and 110 other children undergo life-transforming
surgery to correct deformities and birth defects.
Juliette
of the Herbs
Producer/Director
Tish Streeten
For more than 60 years,
Juliette de Bairacli Levy has lived with the
Gypsies, nomads and peasants of the world. She
learned the healing arts of these people who
live so close to nature and became a world-renowned
herbalist, author and pioneer in holistic veterinary
medicine.
This is a beautifully
filmed lyrical portrait of her life and work.
Paulina
Produced, co-directed
by Vicky Funari and Jennifer
Maytorena Taylor
As
a child in Mexico, Paulina was abandoned by
her family and traded for land. Now middle-aged,
she returns to her village to confront her family
about what happened and encounters a web of
intrigue and denial. Paulina juxtaposes
documentary and narrative styles to explore
the charactures' radically different perspectives
with the memories of this vital, resilient woman.

Woman
of the Cloth:
Fabric Artist Penny Sisto
Director/Producer
Caroline Nelli
|
|
| To
say that Penny Sisto makes quilts is to
say that Melville wrote about fish. A natural
storyteller, she mesmerizes the viewer as
she reflects on life and the art she creates
as the camera rolls."No matter how
harsh the topic, the fabric cushions that,"
Sisto says," you remember as a child
being wrapped in a quilt; you are open to
listen to it." |
